Abstract

Background With the recent emergence of the 4th Industrial Revolution as an important paradigm, not only has users' interest in smart speakers been increasing, but various studies have been conducted on the user experience of voice agents. However, these studies provide knowledge and methods focused on language and voice, or specific situations and users. In this study, I would like to propose design considerations to improve the overall user experience of smart speakers.
Methods First, I investigated the existing smart speaker status and prior research on user experience centered on VUI. Based on this, I conducted user research to identify the needs of existing smart speaker users and suggested design considerations to improve user experience.
Result I analyzed design considerations based on product case analysis, prior study and user survey, and derived three types: identity integrated design, rich voice dialogue design, complementary modality recruitment. Also, I proposed the application of each element of consideration.
Conclusion In this study, I proposed design considerations for improving the user experience of smart speakers, based on product case analysis, VUI-centered user experience prior study and user survey. Also, it is expected that this study can be used to propose smart speaker design concepts according to various user and service characteristics.
