Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the issues and subjects for the vitalization of smart TV market in South Korea. On the basis of primary survey,the study investigates the technical characteristics of smart TV, the way of market development, and business types as well.
The introduction process of smart TV has a strong tendency to induce the same type of technology as well as of business model and user pattern in smart phone fields. In addition, the way of diffusion centralized by hardware development can be considered as the obstacles of invigoration of broadcasting contents business. To solve the problematic situations, the current definition of smart TV including excessively comprehensive meaning should be re-conceptualized with the distinction between terminal and service area. The re-definition of smart TV will lead to represent discriminative development strategies for each area.
This study also gives guidelines as to how government should indicate its position and make the particular responsibilities for the core controversial issues with inclusion of the technical standards, profit sharing between manufacturer and content provider, investment costs on communication network establishment.
