Abstract

This study examined the factors of casting sports stars in sports entertainment programs and the success factors through in-depth interviews with 9 production crews. As a result, popular factors for sports entertainment programs include genre factors that are easy to relate to and immersion in reality programs, and timing factors such as the corona pandemic and recent large-scale sporting events. Factors that favor sports stars include freshness differentiated from existing entertainers, liking as a national hero, sincerity and desire to compete as former athletes, and experience and familiarity as sports stars. However, they were concerned about the increased guarantee of sports stars, the indiscriminate and prolific appearances of some players, the lack of sense of entertainment, and the exposure of negative past histories. Finally, it was found that sincere program production is important for the success of sports entertainment programs, and proper production standards to balance reality and entertainment are needed. In addition, the discovery of fresh materials and the development of a format that can contain authenticity are expected to be the key to success.
