Abstract
Research studies on the associative relationships among sports are very few. Furthermore, there are no research studies on the interrelationships or influential impacts across sports. Among different sports, understanding the beneficial impacts of one sport to other sports will be helpful for developing strategies and improving the perceptions of one sport and for leading into efficient education of one sport during lifespan. For these reasons, we propose and investigate two research questions. One question is related to the perceptual associative relationship and influential relationship among sports for general public. The other question is related to which sports are preferred to learn or be educated across different phases of lifespan and to the identification of differences between male and female in terms of numbers and types of sports participation.
15 sports that general public usually participate in are selected and 270 samples are used for analysis, Empirical results show that there are some similarities among jogging, climbing, health, and swimming. Also, taekwondo and kendo, ping-pong and tennis, skate and skiing, golf itself, and baseball, basketball, soccer are perceived similar respectively. However, these patterns are not the same for influential relationship that has direction. Sport that belongs to one similar group extend the influence to other sports that belongs to one dissimilar groups. This indicates the importance of understanding the difference between associative relationships and influential relationships. Educational preferences for different sports are not the same across different stage of lifespan and differences between male and female in terms of the numbers and types of sports to learn exist
