Abstract
This study aims to draw implications for urban regeneration through vitalizing a riverfront by inspecting Chicago Riverwalk that transformed the under-used river into the vibrant public space. The historic literature and comprehensive plans related to the Chicago River were reviewed to investigate the historical background of the river and the implementation process of the project. Furthermore, the characteristics of planning and facility management status were examined since its completion.
Riverwalk is the project based on Burnham and Bennet's riverfront vision for the Chicago River in the Plan of Chicago of 1909.
Riverwalk transformed the Chicago River into the attractive riverfront space and vitalizes the adjacent areas with characteristic public spaces and various programs. The implications from Riverwalk project can be summarized as follows; First, the traffic system and pedestrian accessibility should be reorganized focusing on the river in order to activate the riverfront. Second, the participations in program managements by the private community organizations are essential for successful urban regeneration as well as the characteristic riverfront spaces. Third, various financial techniques to raise funds should be utilized and the project should be implemented step by step according to financial stability. Finally, sustainable management measures are required to maintain and spread the identity of the waterfront.
