Abstract
This paper examines the impact of COVID-19 on the offline and online market sales and population movement using credit card transaction data occurred in Seoul, from a Korean major credit card company, from January to May of 2020 through Python programming. Focusing on the retail sales, this paper compares the sales of online market versus offline market using transaction data for Internet malls and offline department stores. In addition, to check the influence of COVID-19 on consumptions by gender, total expenditures for men and women were analyzed before and after COVID-19, respectively. Moreover, this paper investigates the expenditures consumed in Seoul by Seoul residents and non-residents during pre-COVID and post-COVID to find out how population movement has been affected by COVID-19. Lastly, this paper compares sales of convenience stores by districts residents and non-residents to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the population movement within 25 districts in Seoul because the increased transactions in local convenience stores in each district can imply decreased population movement by COVID-19.
