Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between leisure motivation and happiness for individuals who enjoy cycle riding for their leisure. By using convenience sampling method, individuals were drawn from cycle clubs located in Seoul, Korea (n=190). To prove validity and reliability of the instruments in this study, confirmatory factor analysis and reliability tests were performed. Regression analyses, ANOVA, and t-test were conducted to identify the relationships among study variables. First, a regression analysis demonstrated that the leisure motivation subcomponents (knowledge, social, compentecy, and relaxational motives) have positive and significant effects on happiness. Second, a significant difference was found between beginners’ group and specialized group on happiness. Third, a significant difference was also found among groups (low, high, and highest investment for cycle riding equipment), on happiness. These findings provide empirical support for the contention that cycle riding is leisure activity contributing to the happiness for the public, and programs related to cycle riding need to be developed based on systematic marketing segmentation. Future research implications and suggestions for policy making were also discussed.
