Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to establish the basis for the health-related research of opticians and the improvement of working conditions by grasping the status and perceptions of general and ocular health care for optometrists. Methods: A survey was conducted on 131 optometrists working in a metropolitan area. Among the distributed questionnaires, 127 were analyzed, except for 4 surveys in which responses to key variables were unfaithful. The questionnaire consisted of 13 questions on the demographic characteristics and general health care of subjects and 11 questions on ocular health care. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Statistic 18.0. Results: 48.0% and 19.7% of optometrists are now currently self-managing their general and ocular health care, respectively. The analyses of the general and ocular health care status according to the demographic characteristics of the subjects showed that general health care was affected by the regular holidays, working member and age while ocular health care was affected by the working days per week, regular holidays, career, type of optometrist and working member-working member is the number of colleges-. Comparing and analyzing the reasons for not taking care of general and ocular health, 48.9% and 61.4% of them thought that they do not need to do so, respectively. Conclusions: Factors such as long working hours and working days, irregular holidays, etc. have been shown to affect the subjective health condition and health care of optometrist. Compared to general health care, the proportion of optometrists who did not feel the need for ocular health care was higher, and they tended to be more negligent in ocular health care than general health care. This is expected to result in a lack of information and awareness of ocular health care, which would not have led to actual health care.
