Abstract

This study proposes an easier way to access and utilize the algorithm driven design which is a design tool in the 4th industrial age. As a result, this study can help the beginners of algorithm driven design and complement the existing algorithm driven design process to utilize the complementary process for creating organic design works. Algorithm driven design has the great advantage of bringing infinite possibilities to designers just by adjusting parameters. However, beginners of algorithm language feel a big gap between the image of the design result they imagine and the algorithm language. As a way to narrow these gaps, this study suggests an algorithm sketch template. Algorithm sketch templates can be used in the preliminary stages of “algorithm construction” through computer programs, and algorithm sketch templates are a kind of planner that allows designers to organize their design ideas into sketches and natural languages. The most important problem in algorithm driven design is how designer can think the given design subjects from small unit and distinguish that steps clearly. Algorithm sketch templates helps the algorithm segmentation process and helps to plan the algorithm more systematically. However, this study has limitations in that it is difficult to predict and plan all algorithm commands through algorithm sketch templates, beginners may have difficulty in the step responding to functional words of computer programs during algorithm sketch process, and ‘validation of usefulness’ of algorithm sketch templates has not been performed. Despite these limitations, algorithm sketch templates are expected to help beginners, who is first time in algorithm driven design to understand and experience the intrinsic process of algorithm driven design. In addition, future research will be conducted on the found limitations.
