Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest ways to improve the existing product development process through the understanding of the upcycle design ecosystem in order to expand the size of the domestic upcycle industry, which is active in constructing the context but passive in constructing the content of the product. As a result, the limits of the domestic upcycle ecosystem were recognized through analysis of the collected related literature and cases, and the approach to improve the competitiveness of upcycle products was made in the view of design. At first, potential limitations on the growth of the upcycle industry were extracted through analysis of domestic articles related to upcycling and the products produced by domestic and foreign companies. Second, a method for effectively performing sustainable upcycling centering on the existing product development process was suggested. Third, based on the insights found in the product development process method, a conceptual model of the new upcycle product development process and policies to be preceded for effective implementation were presented. In this study, it is found that upcycle product development is organically connected with material, processing method, and production process, and therefore it is necessary to improve the integrated and concurrent engineering design different from the traditional product development processes. This upcycle product development process requires collaboration with related engineering disciplines and approaches to an extensive concept of service design to satisfy various stakeholders involved in sustainable ecosystem maintenance. In addition, political support is needed to build advanced material banks and educate experts in upcycle product design who have acquired the ability to integrate.
