Abstract
This study conducts a post-implementation review of crypto asset accounting guidelines and analyzes the determinants of the disclosure quality of financial statement notes related to crypto assets. This paper evaluates a total of 47 companies that disclosed information with respect to crypto assets in the notes of their financial statements in the 2024 semi-annual reports. The disclosure quality was measured by assessing whether ten selected items were disclosed or not. The result of the post-implementation review shows that approximately six out of ten crypto asset-related disclosure items are disclosed in the notes. Disclosures regarding the disposal of crypto assets were relatively less implemented. This study also found that there is no statistically significant relationship between the appointment of Big-4 accounting firms and disclosure quality. However, companies in the software development industry had a higher level of crypto asset-related disclosure quality than those in other industries. This suggests that improvements in regulatory understanding and compliance levels may occur through knowledge spillovers and sharing within the industry. In particular, small companies in the software industry exhibited the highest disclosure quality. The findings of this study highlight that even small startups and venture firms can achieve high levels of regulatory compliance when knowledge sharing within the industry is encouraged. Furthermore, this study offers valuable insights for both companies and regulatory bodies.
