Abstract

Purpose
This research was aimed to investigate actual states of cosmetic color soft contact lens (hereinafter circle lens) wear and their management in female high school students. The educational status for lens wear and care was also investigated.

Methods
The survey on the actual states of circle lens wear as well as care and disinfection of circle lens and their cases was conducted against 319 female students in high schools located in Nowon-gu and Jongno-gu, Seoul from June to August in 2015.

Results
The experience of circle lens wear was reported in 52.4% of 319 students, and the first time of circle lens wear was the most common (28.7%) in the first year of middle school. The cosmetic aspects such as color and design (33.7%) were most highly considered for the purchase. Among the experienced circle lens wears, 74.9% was current circle lens wearers. The circle lens that could be worn longer than 6 months (28.8%) were most highly used, and the most highly answered daily wearing time was 6 to 8 hours (25.6%). 58.5% of circle lens wearers replaced lens care solution during long-term storage of circle lens. It was also found that 61.1% and 55.1% of the circle lens wearers were respectively instructed how to care lens including cleaning, storage and etc and how to distinguish the front and back of lens while 34.1% and 16.2% of them were taught lens case care and after-visit care, respectively.

Conclusions
From the results, it was concluded that the education for caring lens and lens case during purchase was not satisfactory compared with the wearing rate of circle lens in female students in their 10s. Therefore, it is required the education for wearing and caring circle lens should be thoroughly accomplished for contact lens users.
