Abstract
The goal of this study is to examine which method of evaluating extensive reading will cause students to gain more interest and self-confidence by investigating two methods of evaluation, i.e., a reading quiz or a reading log. The participants in this study were first year 86 university students: reading quiz class (30) and reading log class (33). The students first responded to a questionnaire concerning their interest and self-confidence in English reading. During the extensive reading program, they read some modified books, graded readers, and then either took a reading comprehension quiz or completed a reading log to determine their reading comprehension. This study revealed that both groups of students thought their assessment instrument was effective. Although both group students did not show significant difference in their interest in extensive reading in this study, as for self-confidence, both group students showed more self-confidence after treatment.
