Abstract

[Purpose] The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the differences of bank loan behavior by the foreign-capital owned banks. In addition, this paper analyzed the change of bank loan behaviors by the foreign-capital owned banks after the 2008 global financial crisis.
[Methodolgy] This paper analyzed the Korean bank data of 2000~2017 using the panel data analyses and trend analyses.
[Findings] The foreign-capital owned banks showed the lower corporate bank loan ratio with the higher small and medium-sized business loan ratio. However, Foreign-owned capital banks showed the higher household loan ratio and housing mortgage loan ratio. After the 2008 global financial crisis, the foreign-capital owned banks raised the house hold bank loan ratios, whereas they lowered the corporate loan ratio, small and medium-sized loan ratio and the housing mortgage loan ratio.
[Implications] Because of information asymmetry problems in domestic firms and bank loans, Foreign-capital owned banks may show passive bank loan behaviors in corporate bank loans, whereas prefer to loan to safer loan sectors such as household loan or mortgage loans. Thus, the empirical evidences of this paper will give new insights to the banking industries as well as to the preceding research areas.
