Abstract
This paper examines the impact of foreign-ownership of banks on main bank relations using South Korean data. Empirical analyses in this paper show that the foreign-ownership of banks might make the bank-firm relationship weaker. Particularly, it investigates the lending behavior of firms from the bank due to the foreign bank relations using various kinds of foreign-owned bank relations: the main bank of foreign-ownership, the ratio of the loan from foreign-owned banks, the ratio of the loan from the 3 commercial foreign-owned banks, the ratio of the loan from the branches of foreign bank. Empirical analyses in this paper show that the foreign-owned bank relations might reduce the dependency of firms on their main banks.
