Abstract

This paper empirically analyzes the trend of reshoring in Korea and the determinants of reshoring using Korean industry-level data. The results show that the technical and institutional factors may not affect the reshoring. Trade cost affects the reshoring and, particularly, the exporting cost is positively related to the reshoring. Considering the trend of the decline in trade cost and the trade liberalization, it implies that the reshoring may not be a trendy phenomenon. The determinants of the purchase of intermediate inputs are also analyzed using SUR model. The results show that the increase in offshoring does not reduce the purchase of home-produced intermediate inputs, because the home-produced and the foreign-produced intermediate inputs are more likely to have complementary. In summary, the empirical study in the paper shows that there is no evidence of reshoring in South Korea and the offshoring still increases. However, the increase in offshoirng also increases the purchase of home-proudced intermediate inputs.
