Abstract

Purpose This study aims to develop an age-specific exercise program by accommodating early childhood motor development. The program is designed to take into account physical literacy as it is essential in figure skating skills. Methods We develop the initial program through a literary review and expert consultation.
The program is revised through a further in-depth interview with an expert group, and a validation procedure finalizes the program. Result The figure skating program has a structure mainly determined by the age axis for five- to seven-year-old children and another axis that partitions the space into a three-dimensional space determined by the conducted exercises. In addition, we develop the program by additionally linking the three core techniques for figure skating, namely, skating, spinning, and jumping, to the age and space axes. Conclusion Given that the program develops a sport-for-all program based on the developmental phase of growth rather than training a professional athlete, it is consistent with the North American direction for sports programs aiming to provide a systematic framework for early childhood participation in sports activities
