Abstract
When previous research studies investigated the impact of brand equity compooents such as familirity, favor, trust on brand attitude or purchase intention, they considered only direct impacts of them or they dealt previous experience as familirity. As a result, they failed to differentiate familiarity with previous experience and did not consider the possibility of moderating role or interactions of previous experience with the relevant brand equity components.
In this research, we divide previous experience into no-experience and experience and estimate the impacts of brand equeity components on brand attitude and purchase intention under two different conditions. In particular, there have been no studies on the impacts of brand equity components under no experience situation. First, we investigate the difference in brand equity components between no-experience and experience situation. Then, we explore the possible difference in the brand equity information processing between no-experience and experience. By using path analysis, we propose and test hypothesis on the direct and indirect impacts of brand equity components on dependent variables.
No-experence situation has low scores on the familirity, favor, and trust compared with experence situation. There has been several previous research studies that showed that , for no-experience people, favoriteness and for experenced people, trust is important factor and showed that the results depend on the types of products. While recognizing the possibility that results differ according to low-involvement, high-involvement, or service, we test hypothesis using soju, air-conditioner, and hair-shop.
Eexperimental results show that brand attitude affects brand purchase intention positively, favor, and trust influeces brand attitudes for products and service. For products, in the case of no-expereince, favor and in the case of experience, trust are the important variables, and for services, trust is important variable regardless of involvement. Familiarity is also important variable for no-expereince case. In addition, we discuss the cultural meanings or implications through no-experence and experence difference.
