Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the criteria that the visual expression of thumbnails of YouTube content affects the interaction for users to acquire information. The study was conducted based on cases of explicit expression that directly conveyed the content. In order to examine the factors that influence interaction in each element, the three product groups that account for the largest proportion of subscribers, such as reviews, comparisons, and introductions, were selected as examples in the domestic YouTube subscriber ranking site category, and a A survey was conducted with a group of design experts and the general public using the YouTube app. As a result, it was found that product photos had the most influence in the image category, and typography, color, and layout all had a great influence on the part that directly expressed the contents. However, the layout of fashion thumbnails was found to focus more on the content target. Unlike the other two cases, some surveyors showed multiple products according to a specific situation rather than one product, so they pointed out the dispersion of gaze and added the same series of products to the fashion thumbnail cases. Because of this, it was found that, from the perspective of YouTube users, when interaction occurs through thumbnails, not only the image but also the core content must be included so that the interaction takes place so that the content can be easily selected. In this study, what are the visual expression factors that affect the YouTube user’s selection in product content thumbnails, and which factors have the greatest influence on the interaction between each factor was identified. After this, I hope that it will provide an opportunity for YouTube content creators and design experts to be used as basic data to analyze thumbnails.
