Abstract
Background : With the recent development of artificial intelligence and the growth of the voice processing technology market, voice agents are being used in various products such as smart speakers, automobiles, and home appliances. In line with this trend, voice platform companies and related academia have been proposing guidelines that can be used to design the user experience of voice agent products. In addition, as users become familiar with voice commands and expect human-like interaction from voice agents, designers are required to design interactions with integrated verbal and nonverbal communication beyond dialogue design for command performance. The purpose of this study is to propose tools to help designers effectively visualize ideas when designing interactions of voice agent products.
Methods : First, through the literature reviews and user interviews, we investigated users’ perception and expectation of the interaction with voice agent products. Based on the results, we also identified limitations of existing methods for designing interactions between users and voice agents. We then proposed a framework and tools for describing and developing interaction ideas of voice agent products.
Result : Based on the user research and prior research reviews, this research emphasizes an integrated approach to designing multi-modal interactions for voice agent products. This paper proposes a conceptual framework and applicable tools that enable designers to effectively visualize interaction design ideas of voice agent products. integrating verbal and nonverbal communication. Examples are also presented to enhance the understanding and applicability of the tools in design practice.
Conclusion : The interaction idea visualization tool proposed in this study will be able to lay the foundation for methods to represent integrated interaction ideas among multi-modal elements along with advance of voice agent products. It is also expected that the tools can be used to develop ideas of voice agent products in design education and practice.
