Abstract
The author tries to analyze his own ten-year-long project called ‘About the Moon.’ As a fine artist whose artistic enthusiasm was usually materialized in video arts, he tries to make more audiences understand by reflecting on what meanings he intended to give life to through his work.
Starting with his major theme of ‘an Asian lyricism,’ images are recomposed by narratives of the ‘male libido.’ At a first glance, the two overlapping topics seem to make an individual’s desire in the images contradict the Confucian traditions of Koreans, who have been encouraged to abstain from such sexual appetites. In the author’s work, the two themes are not that far from each other; rather, they meet at a critical juncture. The author notes that ironically, a Confucian culture has to tolerate, and even encourage, lyricism; as a Confucian society emphasizes self-discipline, its members end up desiring to find a way to let out restrained feelings. In the context of Koreans, who have resorted to expressing their suppressed feelings through lyrics, the author’s intention to overlap sexual desire with tradition is like an attempt to connect dots at polar opposites and to reveal the unique narrative of a lyrical persona.
