Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to examine the management status and support system of urban renewal corporations, which play a key role in community-led urban regeneration activities in Japan, in order to secure the sustainability of urban regeneration projects and derive implications for the role and support system of private urban regeneration organizations. Method: The related laws and government publications were examined to explore the institutional status of urban renewal corporations, establishment requirements, and government support systems. The disclosure materials and homepages of the corporations were explored to analyze the status. Result: The urban renewal corporations were involved in planning and executing events, promoting community activities by disseminating information through websites and social media channels to enhance local activation. Moreover, they have the right to propose urban regeneration plans and obtain special permits for the use of public spaces such as roads, squares, and parks, which leads to generate revenue for their activities utilizing public facilities for community-building projects. Consequently, it established a self-sustaining revenue structure to ensure the sustainability of their activities, while encouraging private participation in urban regeneration projects emphasizing public interest by improving profitability through a combination of tax benefits, subsidies, and financial support.
