Abstract

This study aims to examine the current status of empty house bank established for promoting the use of empty houses in Japan, to analyze the management methods and to draw implications for the empty house information system of Korea. Empty house bank is the system that provides the information on empty houses for rent or sale and connects both the house owners and the prospective customers. The local governments usually run the system not only to solve the problems caused by empty houses through real estate transactions but also to revitalize the area through the population influx. The central government has built the nation-wide empty house banks that provide standardized information to the users with a wider range of choices. The public sector encourages the transactions of empty houses with a variety of incentives reflecting the regional conditions and supports the safe and smooth progress of contract through agreement with the realtor association of the areas. The domestic information system for empty houses will be the first step for the effective management of the empty houses. The strategies should be developed to promote the reuse of the empty houses through the public-private partnership.
