Abstract
This study carries out an empirical analysis of how union wage premium affects the decline of labor union powers in the mid-2000s in Korea, using the 2nd and 3rd waves of WPS. We develop a statistical model upon Freeman(1986) and Blanchflower & Freeman(1992). The dependent variables employed are (1) disaffiliating from the National Centers of Unions and turning into an independent company union, and (2) lower unionization rate, which are two typical indicators for labor union"s decline. The results of basic statistics show that the rate of independent company unions has been being higher during the mid-2000s, but that the unionization rate of individual unions have not been declined so much. The results of regression analyses indicate that union wage premium has statistically significant effects on becoming an independent company union, but no significant effects on lower unionization rates. Finally outlined and interpreted are the results of this study, and discussed are their implications for where the Korean labor-management relations system will go.
