Abstract

Despite the growing need for research on the effect of this system as the demand for telecommuting increases after the outbreak of COVID-19, research on it is lacking. Based on this recognition of the problem, this study investigated the effect of the number of use of telecommuting and satisfaction with using telecommuting on organizational commitment among public employees with experience in using telecommuting, and whether there is any difference in these effects between gender groups according to marital status and having children. To summarize the results of the analysis, first, the number of use of telecommuting did not have a significant effect on organizational commitment, whereas satisfaction with using telecommuting was found to have a significant positive effect on organizational commitment. Second, in the gender group classification by marital status, it was confirmed that the number of use of telecommuting had a significant negative effect on organizational commitment in only the married female group, whereas the satisfaction of using telecommuting was found to have a significant positive effect on it in the unmarried female, married male, and married female groups except for the single male group. Finally, in the gender group classification according to the presence or absence of children, the number of use of telecommuting did not have a significant effect on organizational commitment in all groups, so there was no difference between groups. However, the satisfaction of using telecommuting was found to have no significant effect on organizational commitment in the childless married male and female groups, whereas it had a positive effect to increase organizational commitment in the married male and female groups with children. Based on the results of this analysis, this study suggested policy alternatives such as the increase of organizational commitment by group according to the characteristics of the telecommuting group, the desired timing and voluntary use of telecommuting by the group of married women, the increase of telecommuting by the group of unmarried women, and the need of an alternative for the efficient use of telecommuting for married groups with children.
