Abstract

The tumble flow was evaluated and analyzed by measuring the three-dimensional velocity distribution inside the cylinder of an SI engine in a steady flow bench. To this end, a stereo particle imaging velocimetry was constructed, and tumbles were evaluated for multiple ports, and compared with the existing method, resulting in the following conclusions. Due to limitations in the analysis domain and high-speed flow measurements, the accuracy of quantitative evaluation using the SPIV is low, resulting in underestimation of the flow rate and overestimation of the tumble ratio. Despite these limitations, however, the relative value relationships of the tumble ratios are consistent with those of other assessment methods. Therefore, in the SPIV evaluation, there is no problem with the important relative comparison, and at the same time, the qualitative analysis is valid, so it is possible to confirm the qualitative characteristics of a specific port that has been developed and use it as design data for a port to be developed later.
