Abstract

Even though《Samguk Yusa》is a kind of Buddhist hagiography it is awkward that there are chronology of the kings of the Three kingdoms and the 'wonders', which consist of almost half as much as the whole volume. I wonder what was the intention of Ilyeon, the writer.
We can regard 《Samguk Yusa》as a composition of three elements; record of history, compilation of folktales, and the songs and poems.
The folktales of 《Samguk Yusa》are not fantasy alone. They are linked to actual life of the people in the Three kingdom period. The folktales of《Samguk Yusa》tie history and everyday life with the transcendence.
《Samguk Yusa》appears to be telling us that we are supposed to see that history and literature(folktales) are not two, but one.
It may look that history and literature are contrary; when we regard history as time-space-limited and literature beyond it. And yet we human beings are requiring all at the same time. We are historical present, and yet we also are transcendence-oriented, trying to break the human limitations.
It is an idea against Mircea Eliade. He insists that human beings ignore history and tried to return to the beginning of the world. However, we can point that he emphasized only one side of the truth.
《Samguk Yusa》does not ignore the great pain from history, and yet it also accentuates that the pain or history can not ruin ourselves. We can endure and are to be lead to transcendence. And there we find the songs and poems.
