Abstract

<Chonjiwang Bonpoori>, one of the shaman epic of Jeju Island, explains why we have evilness in this world. It says it is because SobyulWang, one of the twin brother, took this world by deception at the time of the Beginning.
Other five shaman epics of Jeju show us the aspects of the evilness we face, tell us what is it like to live with those evilness and how to treat them. We find pragmatic concerns against the evilness in our life.
Five shaman epics are <Chogong Bonpoori> <Igong Bonpoori> <Chasa Bonpoori> <Segyung Bonpoori> and <Moonjun Bonpoori>, which have motifs of the villains or wicked men/women. And I examined the wicked deeds of them and the countermeasure of the other people.
The subject of the bad deeds are across-the-board, men/women, haves/not-haves, upper/low class. Victims are women and children. Typical criminal is homicide and women are in danger of sexual assault by male. Women are blind with avarice and kill a person. These shaman epics bring us to our senses that we live in the world, in which is full of murder, fraud, robbery, and tyranny of sex and class.
They tell us the three contingency plans against the evilness; Homicide as a righteous revenge, Sense of the reality that we should live with the evilness as the evilness has the same origins as the goodness from the beginning, Sublimating our minds to religious value.
These stories are the imitations or the models of our life. We can objectify our life in this world and get discernment on how to live with the evilness. They show us the insight that this world is composed of good and evil at the same time by the roots.
