Abstract

I compared the structure of the 3 myths - the creation myth and Jesus story of the Old and New Testament, K‘iche’ kingdom in Guatemala’s western highlands Popol Vuh’s prominent features of creation myth and epic tales of the Hero Twins Hunahpú and Xbalanqué, and the creation myth and the Hero twins bet in the songs of the shamanic ritual of Jeju Island, Korea.
I used the narrative structure of <Bepodoeopchim> and <Chonjiwang Bonpuri>, the shaman songs of Jeju Island, which I floated before; 1. Cosmic Creation(the first condition), 2. Re-creation(problem and attempt to solve it), 3. Birth of the son of heavenly king and earthly mother(birth of the hero), 4. the son’s solving of the problem(problem solving of the hero), 5. setting up the order of the earth(new order and unfinished problems).
I could arranged the story of the Bible based on the same framework. The first condition is the God’s cosmic creation. The Flood as a recreation,- a problem solving. And Jesus was born between heavenly God and earthly mother Maria. God’s son Jesus showed the new solution, the heavenly kingdom. He established a new order, the Christendom in the world.
The narrative structure of Popol Vuh is as much as the shaman songs of Jeju Island, and the Bible; Cosmic Creation and Recreation, the birth of heroes, the problem solving, and new order of the world. Even though the detailed narratives are different among the three, we can say that the framework of 5-step sequence is similar. But their meanings are not the same.
The shaman songs of Jeju Island told us that the evil will last in this world for the little brother win the game by trick method. Man can not help living without the various wickedness. We ought to admit the evil of this world and tried to have precaution. In case of the Bible man denies this world and waits for the Second Coming as Jesus presented the Heavenly Kingdom. The ancient Meso-American civilization was famous for the merciless sacrifices; it is because we should keep this world pure and strong as the twin heroes repulsed the wickedness. The heroes became the Sun and Moon, so we ought to keep them not to be weak or vanish away.
