Abstract

The Four Gentlemen refers to four plants: the plum blossom, the orchid, the bamboo and the chrysanthemum. Their orders are according to the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The Four Gentlemen have been used in Literati paintings and many people are fond of them at all times. Although there are changes in times and there are some more preferable plants, the representations and significances of the Four Gentlemen remain unchanged.
The theme of “Four Gentlemen” which relate to plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum has been developed following the evolution of Chinese flower-and-bird painting. The appearance of the “Four Gentlemen” did not only stand for the relationship between its own and the nature, but also represent a kind of the character of ancients which contains a kind of moral sentiment and culture. The “Four Gentlemen” realized a kind of self-values through one kind of performance of its own thoughts, consequently, it eventually became to be an important theme for expression of the ancients’ spirit.
Korean white porcelain gradually found its own emotional side of Korea, though it received a lot of China’s influence. Needless to say, in Joseon Dynasty, the “Four Gentlemen” which presented in the patterns of ceramic shown the realism, even the abstractness which presents in the modern paintings can also be found generally. And the elements of point, line, surface in ceramic’s pattern, as well as the beauty of blank and the sense of space which were expressed in Eastern paintings, were intactly reflected in terms of shade and flavor.
This research paper focuses on the comparisons of Korean and Chinese porcelain which have the patterns of the Four Gentlemen by observing the formation and changes in Korea(Joseon Dynasty) white porcelain which has the patterns of the Four Gentlemen. In order to compare the patterns on Chinese white porcelain and Korean white porcelain , researches have been carried out to find out their common points and disparate points from their theories and the analysis of the product photos.
