Abstract

Purpose
This study aimed to figure out whether the correlation of subjective symptom and reading speed changed after reading a paper book and an e-book.

Methods
Thirty subjects aged 18 to 29 (average 23.4±3.2 years) with normal visual function and corrected visual acuity participated in the study. The subjects were asked to read a paper book and an e-book on a tablet PC for 30 minutes under the same experimental condition. The subjective symptoms score was evaluated by using convergence insufficiency symptom survey, measuring the total pages read and reading speed per page.

Results
The total number of pages read with a paper book was significantly higher than the e-book. Subjective symptoms score related to near work increased after e-book reading and tiredness significantly increased amongst the symptoms. Also, subjective symptoms score related to concentration during reading significantly increased after e-book reading compared with the paper book. An observed correlation showed that reading speed reduced as the subjective symptoms score increased. For those who experienced the symptoms of convergence insufficiency after reading, both reading speeds for paper book and e-book were affected by subjective symptoms. Especially, the subjective symptoms and reading speed showed relatively high correlation after e-book reading compared with the paper book, resulting in the greater influence of subjective symptoms on reading speed by e-book reading.

Conclusions
Reading with e-book induced different changing levels of subjective symptom and reading speed than a paper book. It suggests that the correlation of individual subjective symptom and reading speed is related to the degradation of convergence function caused by reading.
