Abstract

Purpose
The present study aimed to investigate the changes in accommodative function according to media type during near work.

Methods
A total of thirty normal subjects aged 18 ~ 29 years (mean 23.4±3.2 years) with normal visual correction were included in this study. The subjects were asked to read a paper book and e-book on tablet PC for 30 minutes in the identical experimental condition such as illumination of the laboratory, working distance, paper size, letter spacing and font size. The accommodative amplitude, accommodative facility, accommodative lag, NRA (negative relative accommodation) and PRA (positive relative accommodation) were measured before and after reading.

Results
The accommodative amplitude didn’t show any difference between paper book and e-book in dominant and binocular eye. Decrease of accommodative amplitude by reading e-book was larger than the paper book reading in non-dominant eye. The binocular accommodative facility was significantly decreased after e-book reading. The accommodative lag was not significantly changed regardless of the media type during reading. The NRA showed similar changing pattern between paper book and e-book. However, the decrease of PRA by e-book reading was slightly larger than paper book reading.

Conclusions
Some difference in accommodative function was induced by near work using a tablet PC compared to paper book and its difference was confirmed to be varied depending on individual.
