Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of chronic pain in middle and high school female sparring Taekwondo athletes in South Korea. A cross sectional survey was designed and used for this study. A total of 225(middle=90; high school=135) athletes participated in this study. Each athlete must meet the criteria of subject selection such as a black belt level and a current competition participant. In results, a total of 114 (50.7%) athletes reported chronic pain. The high school athletes showed a higher prevalence rate than the middle school athletes (59% vs. 39%). The higher frequency of chronic pain was observed among athletes who practiced Taekwondo more than five days a week. The lower body region (85 cases, 75%), the ankle joint (52 cases), was the dominant injured body part. χ2-tests showed there were significant differences between education levels; competition experiences; past injury history; and training frequency per week(p≦.05). In conclusions, overall prevalence rate of chronic pain was high in female sparring Taekwondo athletes.
