Abstract
Critical research has been conducted mainly in terms of non-film discourse on "The Wandering Earth," one of the most successful SF blockbusters in Chinese film history. Unlike the original novel, this paper conducted a detailed text analysis on how the "A Community of Shared Destiny for Mankind" ideology, which criticized American-centered hegemonism and advocated alternative values, was successful in visualization through movies. SF movies dealing with future time and space and events that do not yet exist tend to strengthen the reality of storytelling and induce audience immersion by utilizing mythological narrating. The mythical narrative, which mixes unfamiliar and heterogeneous elements to make it easier to accept them as such from the beginning, strengthens the real acceptance of "dreams" that do not yet exist.
In the storytelling of the movie "The Wandering Earth," this is especially embodied by the use of the myth motif of "Siblings get married after the Flood(洪水男妹婚)" and "The Foolish old man moves the mountain(愚公移山)." The "Siblings get married after the Flood" motif is found mainly in non-Han(非漢族) mythology in southern China, reinforcing the status of China, a multi-ethnic country, while evoking the effect of summoning a new generation representing Chineseism.
The motif of "The Foolish old man moves the mountain" promotes socialist heroism in completing tasks following the hands of children, while strengthening storytelling that excludes the existence of individuals. As such, the storytelling of the movie "The Wandering Earth," uses the characteristics of the myth motif and the mythology narrating to the fullest, sealing internal cracks and externally destroying the orientation of individual subjects under universal value.
