Abstract

The purpose of the paper is as in the following.
As the broadcasting environment is changing and the nonlinear viewing patterns are getting generalized, the needs for digital convergence type VOD service of consumers are increasing. But most of the preceding studies on the similar topic were mainly focused on the subscribers’ VOD consumption patterns. Moreover, not only most of those studies were just based on questionnaires, but there was also no obvious distinction between free and paid VOD service. To make up for the weak points of those previous studies, this paper deals with the actual paid VOD consumption data to make this study of more academic values.
The research method, content, and result of the paper is as in the following. This study analyzed the effect of the genres of TV dramas on the terrestrial broadcasting channels to purchase VOD contents. The genres of the contents are categorized as romantic dramas, family dramas, historical dramas, action drama, professional setting dramas, and melo dramas. As a result of the research, this study has analyzed 101 drama series which had been aired on the terrestrial broadcasting channels and then aired on VOD. It turns out that the average number of purchasing drama VOD per episode is 4,152. As to the genres, action genre recorded the highest number in average VOD purchases as 6,860. And the post hoc tests prove that romantic and history dramas are more favored than melo dramas.
