Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the self-directed learning experience of university students in an English reading class, and motivate them to become interested in extensive English reading through the self-directed learning method. The experiences and motivations of university night students who hold daytime jobs were analyzed using a phenomenological research method. Five major themes and sixteen minor themes were derived from the participants through in-depth interviews. The major findings of the study for adult language learners with varied background knowledge and real-life experience show that self-directed learning can be an effective means of generating and maintaining interest in English reading. Additionally, the participants exhibited a very positive response to the self-directed learning experience.
