Abstract
Optical fiber sensors are embedded in smart structures to measure temperature and strain. Because they will be subject to embedment, the material properties of optical fibers need to be analyzed. In this study, free vibration tests of optical fibers silica and re-coated optical fibers were conducted to evaluate their mechanical properties; the optical fiber and the vibration signal is measured by Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor. The experimental results were compared to numerical results from the analytical equation, the Rayleigh-Ritz method, and finite element analysis, to investigate the effects of the mechanical properties of the optical fiber on the natural frequency.
