Abstract

The increase of rail passengers and the changes in the use behaviors of passenger facilities necessitates a change of the present criteria for the design of railway stations. For this change of the criteria for design, above all, information on the users' use behaviors required for the design of railway stations is necessary. Therefore, this study aims to define the design information necessary for the design of the passenger facilities in the railway station and to develop guidelines for collecting it objectively and systematically.
To achieve this goal, through analyzing the present criteria for the size of the concourse in high-speed railway stations, the design information necessary for calculating the size was defined, the components of the design information were examined, and a measuring tool to measure it was drawn. In addition, an analysis by persons and an analysis by other programs were conducted though an on-site pilot test to check errors, and the measuring tool for each type of design information was installed in an actual high-speed railway station to present guidelines for collecting information on pedestrians’ behaviors in the space of the concourse.
