Abstract
This study carries out an empirical analysis on the determinants of overtime in order to examine the structural factors of long working hours in Korea, utilizing the third wave of Workplace Panel Survey Data. The empirical model and hypotheses are drawn upon a labor-hour demand function developed by Ehrenberg(1971a; 1971b), Calmfors & Hoel(1988), and Trejo(1992). Estimated is a simultaneous equations tobit model, whose dependent variables are overtime, bonus ratio over monthly regular pay, and labor shortage. The results of this study indicate that both bonus ratio and labor shortage have a significantly positive effect on overtime, and that they are, in turn, significantly positively affected by the previous overtime, which is a vicious cycle of long working hours in Korea. Finally the results are summarized, and their implications are discussed.
