Abstract

The 2009 Revised Curriculum focusing on the cultivation of creative and convergent talent suggests the integrated approach between subjects adopting the concept of STEAM education, starting from a keyword 'convergence'. The current school education provides education of diverse art areas like Gukak(Korean classical music), film, play, craft, and photograph, and the craft area has the integrated attributes of craft necessary to the 2009 revised curriculum.2) Nevertheless, the craft has not been universalized in school education, so that the latent infinite educational resources in craft area should be developed. Thus, this paper aims to produce a convergence educational program for the process of learning/understanding the diversity of other subjects and craft area through the ceramic craft educational program in elementary school craft lesson, and also to suggest its case. Regarding the research method, the range and contents were extracted through preceding researches on craft education and definition of the current 2009 revised curriculum. Focusing on Yi Sun-shin in the figure learning of elementary society, the program was developed by converging diverse methods of craft area and a film 『Roaring Currents』. The craft education connected to Yi Sun-shin was applied like below. Starting with a film 『Roaring Currents』, the life of admiral Yi Sun-shin is connotatively shown, and the concept using the principles of convergence craft education is analyzed. The story is developed through the research of Yi Sun-shin as a great man and correctly understanding of Japanese Invasion of korea in 1592 and 1597. Planning the 1st session(History+Craft), 2nd sess(Geography+Craft+Design), 3rd session (Craft+History+Play), and 4th session(Craft+Science+Play) through the convergent application, the Nanjungilgi(War Diary)-Turtle Ship-Batter of Myeongnyang-Tactics & Strategies were materialized, which was used for the production/application of a craft educational program with four sessions. The conclusions based on the case are like following. First, by producing/recomposing Nanjungilgi as a hanji book, learners could learn and emulate a spirit of recording and attitude of Yi Sun-shin overcoming/writing the hardship of war. Second, The Turtle Ship designed suitable for Korean topography was used to experience the material property of soil through the production of earthenware, and also to learn techniques of ceramic craft and principles of plasticity. Third, the scroll of painting and tactic play became materials to correctly understand the history through Yi Sun-shin's naval battle, and also to motivate learners who used to be far away from art activities. Fourth, the reproduction of Uldolmok in the film 『Roaring Currents』 was led to learners' independent and voluntary participation through the installation art work to scientifically understand Yi Sun-shin's tactics and Korean topography. Fifth, in the results of reflecting the history lesson that could be boring based on the figure learning to craft education, it became a chance to educationally utilize it by increasing the interest in work production and convergently applying Korean cultural heritage. Even though the ceramic craft is still perceived as a part of traditional art, if diverse crafts are connected with other subjects, it could be recomposed as creativity/convergence-type programs suitable for Korea, instead of STEAM. As the craft is not the past-oriented art any more for its diverse artistry and integrated attributes, based on this study, researches on school craft education should be continued, so that it could be reborn as creative craft lesson.
