Abstract
The curtain wall system has become a popular trend for modern building envelopes mainly because of its aesthetic feature. However, low thermal performance and difficulty in exchanging indoor and outdoor air for ventilation are two major factors that need improvement. Generally, influence of a curtain wall frame is not considered when calculating the cooling and heating loads of buildings, which results in inaccurate HVAC load calculations. In this study, the effect of the shape and installation methods of a curtain wall system on cooling and heating loads was analyzed for four types of widely used curtain wall system, which are Capture unitized, 4-side unitized, Capture stick, and 4-side stick curtain wall systems. Heat transfer analysis with THERM and WINDOW showed that the Stick curtain system has better thermal performance than the Unitized curtain system. Performing dynamic simulation with TRNSYS program, averages of the cooling and heating loads were calculated for four curtain wall types. The average cooling load per unit area was lowest at 44.72 W/㎡ with the Capture unitized system in August and the average heating load per unit area was lowest at 21.03 W/㎡ with the Capture stick system in January.
