Abstract

Recently, with the development of information systems including artificial intelligence (AI) technology, our society and the lives of individuals continue to face rapid changes. These changes have also caused major changes in labor, one of which is the Online Platform Labor. The online platform economy refers to an economy in which a company recruits and pays for it as temporary workers as needed. If the form of labor employment so far has been 'input' centered on regular recruitment, it means that it is now changing to a flexible method based on 'output' based on autonomy.
According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor in 2020, the number of online platform workers in Korea amounted to about 1.79 million, 7.4% of the total employed. As the online platform economy occupies one axis of the labor market, more and more people are looking for jobs in the online platform economy. Because the online labor market gives workers extra income, flexibility, autonomy, and opportunity to have multiple jobs at the same time, characteristics of the online platform economy.
In this study, through an exploratory study on the crowdsourcing platform employment, the various motivations of the platform participants are examined. In addition, this research would like to help job seekers in the field of crowdsourcing platforms by considering why workers specifically choose this profession. For this purpose, a survey was conducted with participants of Amazon Mechanical Turk. As a result, it was found that the online platform participants, although non-regular workers, accept their work as a certain job, and earning money is big reason for participation. Also, the word “good“ is used very frequently, and it is thought that they think themselves very positively about participating in the online platform economy.
