Abstract

Krzysztof Wodiczko, an artist and designer, is a remarkable person for the design research. However, he is not known in the society of design in Korea. In case of arts in Korea, there are several academic papers on Wodiczko’s works and the retrospective exhibition was held at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts in Seoul. In fact, Wodiczko has been introduced as multidisciplinary artist. That is the reason why he is not well known in design discipline but known in arts. He has design background definitely in design major and practice, so it is worthy to research on his works as design.
Especially, the concept of interrogative design is remarkable in consideration of current social interesting in design community. Thus, this study explores insights for the design activities and research from Wodiczko’s works under the concept of interrogative design.
Wodiczko’s representative works such as Homeless vehicle, The Veterans' Helmet and Alien Staff are categorized by keywords such as Critical challenging, Parrhesia, and Outsider. As a result, the concept of interrogative design supposed by Wodiczko has contributed to expanding social meaning of design from the ethical aspect to the political level. This is full of suggestions that design might be reached to the fundamental issues over the immediate problem-solving.
