Abstract
This study investigates Hyundai Motor's consumer reviews of edmuns.com and analyzes how consumers' needs differ for internal combustion engines and electric vehicles using text mining. We divide consumer reviews into satisfaction and dissatisfaction groups based on rating scores and examine the differences of consumer requirements between two groups. Also, we derive Hyundai-Motor's strategic implications through in-depth analysis of consumers' reactions represented by eight characteristics of vehicles. This study shows that the Elantra 2012 model has the advantage in mileage and the disadvantage in seat discomfort, small cargo load and noise, while the after 2019 model has the advantage in safety compared to the Elantra 2012 model. Also, this study shows that some reviews have mentioned engine defects, seat inconvenience, which indicates that they still need improvement. Lastly, this study shows that there are differences in consumer reviews between electric vehicles and internal combustion engines because there are no words such as "vibration" and "noise" in consumer reviews of the electric cars, which appeared many times in consumer reviews of the internal combustion engines. The result shows that electric vehicles has advantages in mileage and seat comfort and disadvantages in software update recalls, touch screen inconvenience, and A/S. Overall, Hyundai Motor has been improving consumers' inconveniences when comparing the Elantra 2012 model and the after 2019 models, and the consumer requirements between electric vehicles and internal combustion engines were different. A/S problems were identified as matters to be improved for electric vehicles, while engine defects and seat inconvenience are for internal combustion engines.
