Abstract

This study analyzes domestic research trends on director Yeon Sang-ho’s theatrical animations, films, and OTT original series. A total of 66 out of 73 Korean abstracts were examined using KrKwic, VOSviewer, and Voyant Tools for text mining analysis. The research primarily focuses on his theatrical films, with comparative and integrative studies on animations and OTT series also being active. Animation studies mainly analyze transmedia cases like <Seoul Station> in relation to <Train to Busan>, exploring social fears and power structures. Film studies highlight disaster and zombie narratives, focusing on <Train to Busan> and <Peninsula>. OTT research includes character analysis comparing <Train to Busan> and drama studies centered on <Hellbound>. Yeon Sang-ho captures both public and academic interest through his unique directorial style, which consistently transcends the boundaries of animation, film, and drama. Yeon Sang-ho’s works delve deeply into social structures and power dynamics, while also demonstrating a transmedia approach that expands across various platforms and genres. In the future, analyzing and organizing other directors’ content based on audience reception practices could contribute to a more systematic development of director and film theories, while also enabling a swift response to the evolving demands of the content market.
