Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to test and develop a valid and reliable serious leisure inventory and measure (SLIM) in a Triathlon sample and to identify the causal relationships among serious leisure, perceived happiness, and behavioral intention. Gould, Moore, McGuir, and Stebbins(2008) originally developed SLIM from adherence to the six qualities of serious leisure as conceptualized by Stebbins (2001). Initial items were translated from English into Korean based on serious leisure instrument of Gould et al. (2008). 2016 70.3 IRON Man participants(N=170) were recruited to participate in the study by using purposive sampling method. The event was organized by Korea Triathlon Association and sponsored by Busan organizing committee. After the statements and subcategories of the serious leisure were determined, EFA and CFA were used to prove the construct validity and reliability of the measurement tool. The 39 items of the serious leisure scale were loaded on the following 4 factors: skill development (9 items), enhanced self-esteem(9 items), self-gratification(9 items), and unique ethos(12 items). In this article, future research directions will be provided in relation to the development of instrument for serious leisure construct and relationships with other socio-psychological variables.
