Abstract

Mine damage has resulted in water pollution, soil pollution, deforestation, subsidence. These damages also cause the unnecessary external costs and the critical health threats. Furthermore, there have been few studies about the economic effect of mine reclamation. Therefore, this study attempts to calculate the benefits of mine reclamation with comprehensive considering various types of mine damages. For the virtual mine with 15 ha size, marginal willingness to pay to reduce a level of subsidence occurrence is calculated as 46.08 Korean won per household per year, marginal willingness to pay to restore 1% of damaged forest with 3 ha size is calculated as 5.87 Korean won. These results contributes to providing policy-makers with useful methodological framework and quantitative information in the decision-making process related to mine damage and mine reclamation.
