Abstract
The poster advertising design in digital environment offers various information and images to common people. The posters creating as a printed media should analyze the characteristics through the various posters in the historical backgrounds. It should stimulate the usabilities of poster advertising design in digital environment.
In this study, the principles of poster design and its historical backgrounds were recovered to check the importances and the roles of poster advertising design. Political and social poster design was analyzed by the elements of design. Leading people to aware the big influences of poster design in digital environment is the purpose of this study. For the scope of this study, the poster collections of International Poster Gallery and Massachusetts College of Art and Design are used to analyze the visual elements of selected posters. Those posters are focused on political propaganda and social protest. Their styles and characteristics are analyzed by the elements of visual expressions.
The methodology of this study is categorizing the selected posters by political and social advertising elements based on the popular issues. The elements of visual expressions are metaphor, graphic, color, layout, and storytelling. The results of this study are the reorganization of styles and characteristics of posters' visual expressions. According to the comparison of characteristics, the propaganda posters are expressed by strong visual elements. The popular issues on the internet are expressed with user experienced images in the posters. The role of posters and its scope of usabilities will suggest the possibilities and importances of poster advertising design in the digital environment.
