Abstract

The free-piston Stirling engine (FPSE) is a heat engine that eliminates the mechanical link of the classical Stirling engine and composes a vibrational system by connecting springs to each piston. The FPSE has a large variation in performance, depending on operating conditions such as load damping because the amplitude and phase angle between the displacer and power piston are variable, unlike with the classical Stirling engine. The performance characteristics including variation in load damping are important in the design of linear alternators that are connected to the FPSE. T herefore, this paper presents dynamic behaviors and performance characteristics through external load tests of an FPSE connected with a variable external load dashpot. External load tests were conducted by the changing external load of the dashpot at constant heater temperature.
The experimental results show that the piston amplitudes were significantly influenced by the load damping variation, resulting as the most important design specification for the linear alternator. In addition, an experimental method to determine the optimum design specification for the linear alternator is proposed by measuring the load damping, PP amplitude, and damping force that generates the maximum shaft power through load tests.
