Abstract

In this study, we investigate the linkage between welfare attitudes and partisan support. Do pro-welfare electorates always support for pro-welfare parties? If not, who are the pro-welfare electorates who do not support for pro-welfare parties? What leads them to have such behaviors? We hypothesize that there would be a generational difference between the young and the old in their linkage between welfare attitudes and partisan support, i.e., young pro-welfare electorates are likely to support for pro-welfare parties but old pro-welfare electorates are not because the old are sensitive to security issues and are likely to believe that conservative parties can handle the security issues better than liberal ones. Using the 20th South Korean National Assembly election survey, we find that our hypothesis is substantiated. The results of this study suggest that pro-welfare parties are having difficulties in mobilizing pro-welfare citizens due to generational differences.
